Poodle Sizes: Toy, Miniature & Standard Guide

Confused by royal, teacup and moyen? You are not alone. The American Kennel Club recognises only three Poodle sizes: standard, miniature and toy. Everything else is a marketing name. This guide gives you the official measurements and the truth behind the extra labels.

Bottom line: only standard, miniature and toy are recognised sizes. Royal, teacup and micro are sales terms, and the extremes come with real health risks.

1. The standard Poodle (the original)

Myth

The "Royal" myth

Royal is a marketing label for an oversized standard, not a recognised size. Extra weight puts more strain on growing joints, so ask about hip and elbow screening on both parents. You do not need to pay a premium for the word.

2. The moyen (klein) Poodle

Status: an official size in Europe, registered as a small standard in the US
Why: big enough to hike, small enough to travel easily

3. The miniature Poodle

Handle with care

A toy is fragile. A jump from the sofa can break a leg, so teach children to sit down to hold one and never leave a toy alone with a toddler.

5. The "teacup" Poodle (the danger zone)

Reality: usually the smallest puppies in a toy litter, not a separate breed

Health

Why breeders avoid it

Extreme small size raises the risk of hypoglycemia, hydrocephalus and heart defects. If you want a small dog, a healthy toy at 4–6 lbs is a far safer choice.

FAQ: Poodle growth

When does a standard stop growing?

Standards reach full height around 12–15 months and keep adding muscle until about two years. Talk to your vet about timing for neutering, because growth plates need to close first.

How big will my puppy get?

A rough rule of thumb is to double the weight at four months, but it is only a guide and works best for standards and miniatures.

Can I show a moyen in the AKC?

Yes. Because a moyen is over 15 inches, it competes in the standard ring. It is registerable, but may be smaller than the big standard dogs.
